Save Yourself

The silver bullet in the Terri Schiavo case would have been some objectively verifiable proof that she wanted to remain alive in her current condition. As none exists (save the husband's original story and testimony) the current years-long battle has erupted. If she had written down somewhere that she wanted to be alive then the controversy would be lessened.

Participating in NRLC's Will to Live Project is a way to avoid the same problem. This seems to be a fairly sophisticated project, as it includes a form for every state. Obviously it's not a full replacement for an attorney, but it gives you a good idea how to protect yourself in the event you become unable to effectively communicate, like Terri Schiavo.

The Terri Schiavo case is especially creepy because she's conscious and feels pain, and lacks only muscle coordination (speaking, moving and swallowing are more or less beyond her until she's rehabilitated). That means that the various times they've started the process of starvation-termination, she felt the pains associated with it. NRLC went to some trouble to provide the legal documents for us all to avoid a similar fate.
